The Last of Us Remake could get a simultaneous PS5 and PC release in September, it’s claimed

The anticipated The Last of Us remake is likely to launch simultaneously on PS5 and PC, it’s been claimed.

That’s according to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb, who was asked about a potential September release date for the as yet unannounced title on the latest episode of his video show GrubbSnax.

Earlier this month, a new Twitter user calling themselves The Snitch seemingly leaked the contents of Sony’s State of Play presentation as well as the existence of what’s claimed to be Hideo Kojima’s new horror game Overdose.

The account’s third tweet to date was a cryptic message posted on Wednesday. “PART 1 – 02.09.2022” it reads, followed by emojis for a video game controller and a PC.

Given that Naughty Dog’s most recent release was The Last of Us: Part 2, the prevailing theory is that Part 1 refers to a Last of Us remake.

Grubb, who said last month that he was confident the game would be released this year, had the following to say when asked about the tweet and a potential September 2 release date.

“To me that date sounds right, coming to PC at the same time sounds very right, that sounds exactly in line with what I’ve heard,” he said.

Bloomberg first reported last April that a remake of 2013’s PS3 game The Last of Us was in the works for PS5.

It claimed the project was originally in development at PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group before the studio was switched to a support role on the game.

The remake’s development is now reportedly being led by series creator Naughty Dog, which is said to have taken charge of the project following the completion of The Last of Us Part 2, which was released in June 2020.

Reliable industry insider Tom Henderson claimed in January that the Last of Us remake was nearly finished and could be released for PS5 in the second half of 2022, and VGC has also heard from our own sources that the game is nearing completion.

An “unannounced remake project” was recently spotted on the LinkedIn profile of a Naughty Dog quality assurance tester, although the description has since been edited to remove mention of the game being a remake.

Unlike Microsoft, Sony has so far chosen not to release its games simultaneously on console and PC, and last June PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst said consoles would remain the priority for new first-party releases.

PlayStation’s first modern PC ports were Horizon Zero Dawn in August 2020, Days Gone last May and God of War this January.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection could hit PC as soon as this month, while Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are coming to PC in 2022.

Last year PlayStation acquired Nixxes Software, which is best known for its work on the PC versions of Square Enix properties including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman and Thief, to help it bring its games to the platform.

PlayStation president Jim Ryan said last month that Sony expects half of its annual releases to be on PC and mobile by 2025.
