Naughty Dog has revealed fresh details about HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us TV series.
During an appearance at Thursday’s Summer Game Fest showcase, studio co-president Neil Druckmann confirmed that filming of the show was due to wrap up on June 10.
HBO recently confirmed that The Last of Us won’t air until next year at the earliest, and Druckmann appeared to hint at a 2023 release date for the adaptation, which he’s co-writing and executive producing with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

“Their last day of filming is tomorrow,” he said. “Craig is up there right now kind of wrapping it all up, so it’s pretty close, closer than you might think.”
Druckmann then revealed a new image from the show (below), taken from an episode which he directed. It shows lead characters Joel and Ellie (played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey) in a museum which featured in a level in the original game.
“I really have to talk about Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, and not only directing them but seeing them do all the other episodes, they have thrown themselves at these roles for a whole year.
“Watching the nuance they bring to these characters, their relationship on and off camera, I couldn’t help but think about [game actors] Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. It felt so similar to the chemistry those two actors had when we made the game.
“And it really feels like this is going to be something special and I will say, this will be the most authentic video game adaptation yet.”
Baker and Johnson then joined Druckmann on stage to reveal that they will appear in the show, although the characters they play and the extent of their roles weren’t confirmed.
The adaptation is the first television series from PlayStation Productions, a studio formed by Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt its original game properties for film and TV.
It will cover the events of the first game and may include content based on The Last of Us Part 2.
Following a leak earlier on Thursday, the Summer Game Fest showcase was used to officially announce the long-anticipated remake of the original The Last of Us.
Called The Last of Us Part 1, it’s coming to PS5 this September and is also in development for PC. Sony also confirmed three editions of the game and pre-order bonuses, although the $100 Firefly Edition has already sold out.
Naughty Dog revealed the first concept art for its standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game too.
Druckmann said the title is as big as any of the studio’s single-player games. It has its own story, a brand-new cast of characters, and more information is scheduled to be revealed in 2023.
The writer and creative director behind The Last of Us games and Uncharted 4 also confirmed that he’s directing a new game.
