Video game soundtrack award added to Grammys

The accolade will “recognise excellence” in games and other interactive media

The Recording Academy has added five new categories to the GRAMMYs, including Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games.

In 2023, the 65th annual Grammy Awards will include the category to honour original scores created for, or as a companion to a current video game or other interactive media.

“We’re so excited to honour these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and amendments, and to continue cultivating an environment that inspires change, progress and collaboration,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr.

“The Academy’s top priority is to effectively represent the music people that we serve, and each year, that entails listening to our members and ensuring our rules and guidelines reflect our ever-evolving industry.”

The other four new categories are Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance, and Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.

Video game music is being recognised in other mainstream areas — the BBC Proms classical music festival is set to include a games segment for the first time later this year.

Music from Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus, Dear Esther and more will be performed at the show, which takes place August 1.
