Gearbox takes over Eidos Shanghai

Borderlands maker Gearbox Entertainment now has a foothold in China.

The developer and publisher has acquired Eidos Shanghai, which is being rebranded to Gearbox Studio Shanghai. The venture will continue to be helmed by general manager Gigi Ning.

Eidos Shanghai is a subsidiary of Eidos Montreal, which was bought earlier this year by European games firm Embracer, along with the rest of Square Enix’s Westerns studios and a wealth of IP.

“China is a hotbed of industry talent, and I’m confident Gearbox Studio Shanghai will be instrumental in our vision for international growth here at Gearbox,” Gearbox Publishing San Francisco’s president, Yoon Im, said.

“With this addition, we greatly enhance our ability to engage with players in the Chinese market and work directly with local up-and-coming development studios.”

Ning added: “Bringing Gearbox’s vision and creative spirit to our local community is a goal we’re ready to take on. Gearbox has so many fantastic stories to tell, and we’re excited to share those with the players here in China.”

In the release announcing the news, Gearbox said that its Shanghai studio will be anti-crunch and offer competitive benefits.

This follows Gearbox acquiring developer Lost Boys earlier this year, while it also set up a brand new studio in Montreal in 2021.
